CVMC Board of Directors

Our Board of Directors provides guidance to hospital leadership and is made up of individuals who have extensive knowledge of healthcare administration and are passionate about the advancement of healthcare services in the Carson Valley.

Dawn Ahner, MBA, CPA, FACHE
Executive Vice President & Chief Administrative Officer, Renown Health
Dawn joined Renown in 1993. Among her many accomplishments, she was responsible for launching Transformational Health Care at Renown -- a model for continuous improvement based on the lean methodology. She trained in Japan and at Virginia Mason Health Care System before introducing the program to the organization in 2010.

Shannon Albert
Interim CEO, Director of Development & Outreach, Carson Valley Medical Center      
Shannon Albert arrived at Carson Valley Medical Center in 2004 having worked previously in communications at AIG VALIC in Sacramento, Calif. She earned her bachelor's degree in communications and public relations from Sacramento State University.
In her role at CVMC, she oversees marketing, development, food & nutrition services, patient advocacy and human resources. She also serves as the executive director of the CVMC Hospital Foundation. 
She is an executive board member of the Business Council of Douglas County, a community council member of Boys and Girls Clubs of Western Nevada as is a past president of both the Carson Valley Chamber of Commerce and Soroptimist Internationl of Carson Valley. 
She and her husband have two children who keep them extremely busy with their school and sports activities.

Richard P. Derby
Chief Financial Officer, Barton Healthcare System Mr. Derby is a graduate of Dickinson State University and has 40 years experience as a healthcare Chief Financial Officer.  As of November 2000, he assumed the position of CFO for Barton Healthcare System.  Prior to that he was CFO with Valleycare Health System for 4 ½ years.  He has a fellowship through Healthcare Financial Management Association and holds a certification as a Certified Manager of Patient Accounts.  Mr. Derby has documented ability to effectively control all fiscal aspects of a health services organization, including proprietary ventures.  


Paul J. Fry III, MD, FAAOS
Tahoe Fracture & Orthopedic
Dr. Fry graduated from the University of Southern California Keck School of Medicine in 1983. He specializes in Orthopedic Surgery and Orthopedic Sports Medicine and is certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery. His fellowship was with the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and he served his residency in Orthopedics with Shriners Hospital in San Francisco, Letterman Army Medical Center in San Francisco and the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology. "Inspired by the adventures of my youth in the Sierra Nevada, I entered college with the intent to become a wildlife biologist," he said. "Upon graduation, I discovered that the employment demand for those with degrees in wildlife biology were slim to none. With few job prospects, and no money, I decided to join the Army and let Uncle Sam help pay my way through medical school. After serving in Germany during Desert Storm, I returned to my roots in South Lake Tahoe. There I my father at Tahoe Fracture & Orthopedic Clinic (of which he was one of the founding partners). One of the things that I love most about what I do is being able to work together with my patients to help them overcome their problems and get back to 'living.'"

Sy Johnson, MBA 
Executive Vice President & Chief Operating Officer, Renown Health
Sy Came to Reno from PeaceHealth in Vancouver, Wash., where he served as Chief Executive Officer for the Columbia network.
In his role at Renown Health, Johsnon oversees operations at Renown Regional Medical Center, Renown South Meadows Medical Center, Renown's network services including service lines. He also oversees Hometown Health, Renown Health's insurance division.
A national award-winning senior executive with more than 20 years of healthcare experience, Sy has a solid background in strategic, operational and financial business planning; physician relationships and clinical integration; as well as a keen focus on quality and patient service enhancement.

Clint Purvance, MD, CPE
President & Chief Executive Officer, Barton Healthcare System

Dr. Clint Purvance, M.D., C.P.E., earned his medical degree at the University of Nevada  School of Medicine in 1996.  He completed his Emergency Medicine Resident Training Program at the University of Michigan in 1999 and joined Barton Health and Carson Valley Medical Center as an emergency physician.  He is board certified by the American Board of Emergency Medicine in his specialty and as a Physician Executive by the Certifying Commission in Medical Management.  Dr. Purvance served as Chief Medical Officer at Barton from 2007 to 2015 and since has been the acting President and CEO of the Health system.
